The Scots Baronial style of architecture evolved during the Middle Ages, and the castle of Glamis in Angus is perhaps its supreme masterpiece. From the original L-shaped tower of the 14th century it was evolved gradually by successive generations of the ancient family of Lyon. In the 17th century Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Strathmore brought both its interior and its surroundings to a state of perfection. A generation earlier, a younger son of Forbes of Corse castle in Aberdeenshire made his fortune in the Baltic timber trade, earning the name 'Danzig Willie'. He purchased the estate of Craigievar above the river Don in 1610, where he built the castle that 'claims a Scottish place in the front rank of European architecture' (Douglas Simpson). Unlike Glamis, it did not expand over a period of centuries. It was the work of a master-mason of genius, John Bell, and remains as he completed it. What the two castles have in common is the care with which both have been preserved by their owners. Even their ghosts have been happy to stay. Dr Grimble | |||
