They stand in situations whose strategic importance was recognised from time immemorial and whose structures have evolved over centuries in the interests of safety, domestic  comfort and flamboyant display. Both contain outstanding portrait collections and the work of some of Scotland's greatest architects and craftsmen. Fyvie was originally a royal fortress, four square towers connected by curtain walls beside the upper reaches of the Ythan river in the Grampians, a remote outpost of Crown authority. In 1390 Robert III bestowed it on Sir Henry Preston, and it passed through many hands before it was purchased in 1885 by Preston's descendant, the steel magnate Alexander Forbes-Leith. In 1984 it was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland. Thirlestane guards the pass of Lauderdale that runs from the Debateable land to Edinburgh, and it was the Maitlands who erected the castle that still remains in their hands today. Long before Forbes-Leith gave Fyvie its final shape, Thirlestane was transformed into one of Scotland's most splendid places by the skill of William Bruce and the extravagance of his cousin the Duchess of Lauderdale. Its baroque ceilings eclipse even those of Holyrood House. Today there is a museum of Border life to be seen here as well as the castle in which the Maitlands still live.  Dr Grimble
