OVERVIEW

One of Scotland's BEST SELLING Artists with over 330 compositions to his name.

In 1994 he released his ONE-AND-ONLY VIDEO – 'Dancing with the Shands' – which held a Top 10 position in the UK Music Video Charts for 5 weeks during that Christmas. This video is a recording of Sir Jimmy Shand performing with his son Jimmy Shand Junior and his band at Letham Village Hall near to their home town of Auchtermuchty bringing the viewer the music and dances that have made this legendary artist so famous.

All over the world the name of Sir Jimmy Shand is linked to the sound of the Scottish country dance band. In his time Jimmy became this country's foremost exponent of the accordion with a dance band sound that became utterly unique. His music appeals to all ages and is loved by people of all nationalities.

BACKGROUND

BORN

In East Wemyss, Fife in 1908 on the 29th of January — he was one of 9 children, 7 boys and 2 girls, his father was a ploughman-turned-miner.

 

FIRST JOB

Jimmy's first employment was as a miner, but due to the General Strike of 1926 he was taken off full-time employment.

 

FIRST RECORDING

After being offered a job at Forbes music shop when the owner heard him play the accordion, Mr Forbes went on to get him his first recording, a selection of Scottish jigs, in 1933.

 
 

BBC RADIO

He first performed in 1934 on BBC Radio, and then went on to form The Jimmy Shand Band in 1945

 
 

FAMILY LIFE

In 1946 Jimmy married Anne, with whom he has had 2 sons, David and Jimmy Jr

 
 

FAME

As a household name he appeared on numerous TV shows in the 50's and 60's, working with stars such as Andy Stewart, Moira Anderson on shows such as the White Heather Club.

CHART SUCCESS

No.20 in the Charts in 1955 with 'The Bluebell Polka' and appeared on Top Of The Pops.

 

FANS FAINT

Open-air Concert in Aberdeen attended by 20,000 people in the 50's, were female fans fainted and the queues brought the traffic to a stand still.

 
 

AWARD

Jimmy Shand was awarded the MBE in 1962.

 
 

TELEVISION

In 1978 he appeared on the television programme 'This Is Your Life'.

KNIGHTHOOD

Jimmy Shand was Knighted in the year 2000. Sadly Sir Jimmy died on the 23rd of December 2000 — he will be greatly missed by young and old alike.
